Red State Review

Red State is one of these horror movies that has been in development for years more than normal, mainly due to funding issues and Kevin Smith’s other projects, but was it worth the wait? Kevin Smith is my favourite movie director – yes I know, I’m a horror blogger and fan so I “should” be in favour of a dedicated horror director.. blah.. blah .. blah.. I have watched, bought and love all of Kevin Smith’s movies (even Mallrats, although its not top of my list) and Red State is another to add to that list. I understand where some critics come from when they give Smith’s movies poor reviews, its mainly because Smith had done something all the critics have wanted to do or even done but failed. Smith is what critics hate, someone that makes movies for a small niche. Before anyone comments, I am not critic I am someone that likes movies so I will give my opinion…

Red State, is more wordy than most horror movies but it doesn’t take away from the movie as the cast is perfect and the acting is top notch. The movie starts off telling the story of a small American town and a small number of the towns citizens seem to have something against “the homosexuals”. Three high school boys end up organising a 4-some with a women on the Internet, or so they think, which goes horribly wrong as the boys are caught up in a war between the anti-homosexual fundamentalists and government officials.

The story is action packed, has slight hints at suspense and something that just reminds me of Rob Zombie’s movies. If you don’t like what Smith has done in the past don’t let that stop you watching this, as Red State is nothing like Clerks, Chasing Amy or Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

I rate Red State at 4/5 – I really hope Kevin Smith considers doing another horror as I enjoyed his this one.
