I first saw the trailer for Apollo 18 months ago and at that point I was so excited I nearly cried, well maybe not but I was excited to see something a little different from the same type of alien movie we get every year or two. Apollo 18 had a very suspense type feel to it, very much like the Paranormal Activity movies as of late. Does it live up to all the hype, rumours and general talk? Well… No, but I liked it ALOT!
I went to see the movie just last night with my girl friend and I walked in thinking, this is Paranormal Activity in space with Aliens instead of a demon – so I was hoping for a roller coaster of frights and scares, but I got 3 frights… One of them being the music for an advert, so lets just call it 2. So if your looking for a movie to scare or even jump at then Apollo 18 is not your movie, although the story line, acting and the usage of old degraded film made up for the lack of scares.
The story is stronger than I expected it to be, but near the end it does start to tail off which again doesn’t bode well for me, I like to be entertained (or scared) for most if not all of the movie not just some of the movie. The special effects look amazing with the mixture old degraded film look and limited light you would expect on the moon, the aliens, bugs, creatures … what ever you want to call them look realistic to the extent of they don’t look out of place and they don’t take away from the story line by being too CGI.
I have to be totally honest I am a sucker for a movie, video or picture of the moon which I think may have clouded my judgement of what was happening at the end… Basically there’s a slight twist at the end, and its something I didn’t see coming but thinking about it it was clear as day! Its a good ending to what is a decent horror movie.
I rate Apollo 18 a 3/5 horror movie.
